Escape From New York: Louis Rossmann Edition - Hopefully he does not make Texas a bughive

Swiss watchmakers seem to have deserved being BTFO by Seiko. I am apalled at how can Swatch keep a straight face selling junk disposable wristwatches. Chinese watches from Ali Express might be better.
These days, Seiko is at risk of being BTFO by some of the better known AliExpress brands.

My current daily watch is a Steeldive SD1970, which is a Seiko Turtle homage. NH35 movement, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and lume for days. Whilst the Steeldive can't match the Seiko for overall build quality and finish, it's about 90% of the way there and it's a fraction of the price.

Ideally I'd have a Turtle, but the SD scratches that Turtle itch well enough for me to consider putting the money I'd spend on a Turtle towards a different Japanese watch instead, such as an Orient Mako III.

Meanwhile, back on topic... I went searching for Louis' 'If you're going to be the bitch, be the whole bitch' motivational speech, and I found this whitepill from 9 years ago:

along with its followup:

They're all getting BTFO by PTS Resources in Hong Kong and a dozen or so OEMs in Shenzhen.
It's been a gag joke since at least the late 80s. The biggest people bitching about Chinese knockoffs are the US/Swiss embassies. Guess whose the biggest buyers? Embassy staff.

NH35s suck at this point at price/efficiency point (in the vein of "work for 2-3 years well then shit the bed")

Buy a NN28 series (Nanning Watch co) movement, oil it (these don't come lubed) and slap it in your case of choosing. The NN28 is a clone of the the DG28, which was a clone of the Miyota 8215, which was a clone of an ETA. They'll run for decades if taken care of. Plus you can buy spare parts (or just a complete movement lmao).

45RMB = $6, free shipping.

I meant that Seiko in 20th century deserved to win because the Swiss didn't let them compete in orological contests. They stopped the contests once Seiko started kicking ass. Seiko actually used scientific research to make its watches, unlike the artizanal way Swiss did till 1960s.

And Swiss' solution to the Quartz crisis was to produce shitty disposable watches.

But today indeed Chinese are much better regarding the price\value ratio. Seiko will become a high end brand in order to survive (like Omega, Citizen, etc).

I do think there is room for improvement in Chinese watches. I have a Chinese Stowa clone that I like a lot. Sapphire glass, true leather strap, and it is almost indistinguishable to a true Stowa. The only complaint I have is that the fluorescent paint is the old type and not the much improved Strontium Aluminate paint.

And I think some people might buy things like a Seiko for the watch look, design.

I rewatched this video just now, and I want to address some of the things that Louis says about ads. Advertisements are not intended to convince people of the merits of a product most of the time. What the advertiser wants is simply to put the brand in front of your eyes so that when you see it at the store you will feel better about it because you remember having some familiarity with the brand (and of course some ads like the dog bite lawyer ads are there to take advantage of people who don't know how to find dog bite lawyers). The average person also is not repulsed by ads if they are not outright hostile (which they are now on the Internet), and it's enough for a person to see the ad and remember the name or the logo. Of course, the most effective ads are ads which simulate an endorsement from a friend, like when a Youtuber talks about how much they love Raid: Shadow Legends, or a TV show character noticeably eats Skittles, but more traditional advertisements have been effective at generating revenue.

Dual impulse movement bragging rights.

That being said, the Chinese are trending to a no-right-to-repair (they just copy whatever the fuck the US/EU does) for non-movement parts. It differs in that the movement is a standardized goverment movement so it's available from state owned companies. Thankfully, the black market for other parts like the casing is alive and well. If you won't sell it, there's about a dozen other people who make these that will.

So "right" to repair by the sheer viciousness of the free-market parts of the economy.

Another funny video from Louis! It amuses me! Americans have vouched for decades to be fucked in the ass by big corpo with no way of fighting back! Now, are they geting what they asked for?! No.

I'm sorry, I was told that regulation and consumer protection laws were commie bullshit and no true muhrican! Well, enjoy muhrica, where corpos can just say fuck you and get away with theft, and if you say that to anyone you are called un-American.

You reap what you sow.
