But how is that possible? Mald has been a programmer (and sometimes even a hacker) for at least 20 years. He has also been making games for either 6 or 20 years, depending on the day of the week you ask him about it :

you have to be a very special breed of person to gloat about how long you've been doing something to then suck complete ass at it. after seeing heartbound code snippets i personally think he spent 19.8 years watching other people code and then spent the other 0.2 copy and pasting switch statements

also, if he knows "many" programming languages (throughout the 20 years he's been a hacker and programmer of course), surely he would've been able to apply better practices into his own code during heartbound's primitive stage? going back 8 years, that means he would've had at least 12 years of experience which is more than enough to write clean, performant code. hell there's people that have made 3d engines with a quarter of that experience (he doesn't know what a quaternion is), so did his brain turn off as soon as he started learning GML?

Code being easier to read, especially at first glance, gives out big points to alex.

I'm not saying Alex's code is good but what I am saying is that someone more competent can sit down, read it, understand what's its supposed to do and fix it.
