I'd say it's less desperation and just the two of them needed to somebody who was as sex averse as they were. I don't believe for a second that the two of them fucked.

We could imagine it would be all peaches and cream, but the bottom line of the whole scenario would fail no matter who was involved: Channel Awesome was only a newsfeed service: they didn’t pay them or provide studio/equipment for them. The writing on the wall was there pretty early on. When you have a bunch of kids who thought they’d be the next faces of movie/game/anime criticism, they were going to jump ship the moment they realized that. You’ll note that everyone who is still on good terms with Doug et al is from the older generation.

In the end, it was basic self-reliance. JesuOtaku was always kind of a freeloader, but with a built-in Tumblr audience. She wasn’t really of the Channel Awesome universe, I think she was in exactly one of their movies. Snob proved he could run his own weird "universe". If Channel Awesome was collapsing, Snob wasn’t gonna die in the rubble.

So when the whole site turned into the Donner Party, people like JesuOtaku and Snob didn’t need a bigger slice of the pie. Meanwhile, Lupa was already halfway through stomping on the skulls of her enemies. Lewis tries to spin it like she was Joan of Arc, but everyone knows it was a cold-blooded career move.

Everyone involved started behaving like they were in The Crucible. You had Doug Truthers, you had Spoony Truthers (Spoony kind of exited the field by ghosting his own channel while pocketing the Patreon money). Entire cottage industries sprang up, DHI, ED. Mind you, this was pre-Justin revelations. People were analyzing Doug's marriage like it was the Zapruder film.

It was basically a preview of the future: we decide whether someone is shitlib or chud-coded, and from there we invalidate their body of work.

According to his no-longer-archived livejournal it was meant to be a Mazes & Monsters style flick about a FLGS, where the local GM tortures his player group but it's actually becoming real or something. IIRC it went nowhere since he couldn't write a script good enough to be worth putting on film and the idea floated in his mind for years before starting TSE.

They probably could have avoided some of the bigger controversies and creator exodus's that they suffered from. They still would have faced an eventual decline, but more than likely not as messy as the one they experienced . Allison stirred up so much drama during the CTC era. All that drama that happened with Brad would have more than likely never occurred without Allison and her cronies going after him for not abandoning ship. I wonder what a rat like Linkara would have done had he not been given permission to turn on Doug with Allison kicking things off with that Twitter thread.

I don't think the trajectory of Spoony's career would be any different however. I know Allison ended up being the catalyst for a lot things going wrong for him, but to me it was always bound to happen for him. He was a walking disaster. Allison just ended up being one of the key things that sent him over the edge.
