YOU ARE ASKING THE REAL QUESTIONS
I think the biggest point for me is that micro/macro is size difference related powerplay taken to it's logical extreme. Suddenly, depending on which role you're taking, you're either at the whims of a creature far, far larger than you who has to be extra careful as to not hurt you, or in control of a creature that fits in the palm of your hand, which is a fun aspect to consider whichever way you look at it.
If you're like me (someone who already likes height/size difference), then the idea of that being taken all the way to I can fit in the palm of your hand or your footpaw can cover most of my small body or kissing is a full face activity for me is just... woughh. It's the reason so many folks like the idea of taming a dragon- you're putting your trust in something far stronger than you by pure virtue of how much bigger they are.
And I think that's the other thing that makes powerplay as a whole to me quite appealing, it's an exercise in vulnerability and trust. You free yourself of certain choices when someone else is in control, and I think there's a degree of intimacy that comes with that, however that intimacy may present itself.
