This was also when Nick really started to go downhill. So when all that was happening, and he saw that Nick was getting into heavy substance usage and losing the friends he had on Lawtube and replacing them with Dick and co., it doesn't take a smart person to realise how much of a liability that is. I remember both of them saying that Drex would bring his daughter over to Nicks house for visits, who would hang with Nick's kids. He probably felt like continuing that would put his kid in danger, and he would have been right. Drex also would have had to have an awkward conversation with his daughter as to why they are no longer visiting the Rekieta's.

He wasn't slurring unintelligibly, making brain-charred "jokes" that nobody can understand, lurching from side to side, doing gay little coke dances, gurning freakishly, showing difficulty even staying conscious, then going to the powder room for 20 minutes and coming back wired as fuck, etc.

My guess is Drex has been around the block enough to recognize a death spiral when he sees one, and know that you don't want to be at ground zero for the end of it. If the situation is going to involve cops, you probably don't want to be the one black guy there. Also if you've ever spent time sober around people who are fucked up beyond belief, it just isn't fun at all.

Alcohol may destroy your life as surely as a coke or meth addiction, but it doesn't bring the potential criminal associations that drugs do.

The bar or liquor store owner operates a legal business and is unlikely to stab you in the gut over an unpaid bar tab. The coke dealer, who you got hooked up with by some sketchy guy named Jesús you met behind the bowling alley, is less inclined to obey such niceties. My point is that the seediness of the illicit substance attracts people who are OK with being seedy, in a way that being a drunk frankly doesn't.

A cokehead will inevitably surround himself with other cokeheads (Hi April!) and have potentially dangerous people like dealers constantly in and out of his life. Yeah, but when you have a law enforcement contact the cops are extremely unlikely to know that and basically just making a snap decision based on your apperance and behavior. A turd can definitely be polished for those purposes.
