Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

Why do I keep coming back to this series? It's just mashing A for 8 gym leaders every game, or mashing A in turbo on an emulator. Nostalgia a hell of a drug.
Because despite how many would be “Pokemon killers” there are, and no matter how many edgy romHacks there are, nothing else quite scratches the autistic itch?

Pokémon - it’s aimed at kids, but its primary audience is actually just very autistic adults.

Why do I keep coming back to this series?
Because your frens keep bringing you back.
Then you make new frens.
And on and on the cycle goes.

No other franchise has copied the formula quite as well. It's not just about collecting creatures, the gameplay elements and raising of the creature hasn't really been done like this anywhere else, and the single player template is just cookie cutter enough to give you an excuse to play the game again.

I know I will play the first 7 gens for years, not just because there is endless replayability in them but because there is romhacks that actively bring new experiences as well. Newer games don't do much more than stink up the place, so I couldn't care less.

The closest is Dragon Quest Monsters, but even that's different enough.

It's weird how Final Fantasy X got a literal 1:1 clone for some reason (in the form of a Lord of the Rings game of all things, The Third Age) but nobody's had the balls to copy Pokemon completely.

kiiiiiiiiiiiiinda hypocritical they would remove graffiti in BW but allow Team Skull to live in the fucking ghetto and do whatever they want in SM, including spraypaint the floors and walls.
Except I wasn't talking about "effort", I was talking about GameFreak's double standards as to why one is ok but not the other.
I can't believe this needs to be explained, but let me list out the blindingly obvious differences between those two to explain why one is fine and the other is not.
  • Made by two entirely different directors, one of whom is known not to give a rat's ass about world design or worldbuilding consistency
  • Introduction to a game vs literal evil team's base
  • game about truth vs ideals making the truth seem much more questionable from the get-go vs game about space aliens and little girls' blob monsters having sympathetic gangsters as a side attraction
  • game made to attract a new audience of children vs anniversary game made partly to appeal to an older demographic who's familiar with the series (see: Anabel, Red + Blue, Burnett, regional variants, the fucking pokedex entries, etc.)
  • "soft-reboot" meant to keep the series' spirit alive but slightly change its presentation vs active attempt at throwing out the old formula in favor of completely "fresh" and "new" concepts
Do I need to go on
Masuda is fanatically autistic about keeping Pokémon's world at a certain level of idealism, he was very devoted to keeping things appropriate for the audience even when his spergy ass wanted to go full-on JRPG with the series. I honestly think a more urban start to BW would've been very cool, and immediately set the games apart as something to take note of (+ make the shitty encounter pool at the start fit the game better, honestly), but it absolutely would have clashed with the rest of the series in tone and would have been an unusually grim start to a game that's otherwise kind of lighthearted in presentation.
Plus, even though I know he didn't see this coming, changing up the start this much would've driven players away even harder than the rest of the game already did. Imagine all the retards screeching about ice cream and charizard being joined by a new sect of people complaining about how "it isn't Pokémon without a small town and cheerful wilderness at the beginning." God those people would be insufferable.

UNRELATED EDIT TO AVOID DOUBLEPOSTING

There's a "rockabilly" set of merch for Anaheim Worlds, which I can't get over. It's so bizarre and hilarious to me that the Japanese are far more obsessed with American midcentury culture than Americans ever were after the Boomers got too old to push their nostalgia onto current media. :story:
I know it has to do with their own street gangs adopting similar attire and proceeding to be an active nuisance for decades, but it's hilarious to me. It's like if someone randomly thought Victorian dress was the absolute bomb in the actual 50s and wore nothing but black top hats and handlebar mustaches while committing a shit ton of petty crime. It's great.

Also, all the focus on California in Worlds and marketing and general US events is making me schizophrenically suspicious that gen 10 is going to be LA or some other West Coast state. I wouldn't mind that if this was actually gen 7 or something, but after a decade straight of Ohmori I am extremely suspicious that it will be an even worse trashfire than Paldea.

Don't forget that Worlds' Pokémon Center is also getting two other exclusive lines of merch:

One having a high school varsity theme...

And another having a "beach skater" theme...

...and you can't forget the usual Worlds-exclusive plushies and other bonus items like GWP items and competitor welcome kits.

That said TPCi gave a good reason for the three themes...
TPCi said:
This year’s collection draws inspiration from bright, retro-diner design, blending vibrant colors and nostalgic elements that capture the spirit of our SoCal location
...and their not exactly wrong here. The retro-diner design is a nice call back to SoCal's diner culture that's somehow managed to live on in restaurants like Ruby's Diner and Norms.

Ironically enough I low-key love the rockabilly set (the others are a bit too bright for my tastes, the only item I might get from 'em are the box-shaped bag, deck box, and playmat from the beach skater line) and I may have to try to buy a welcome kit off of a competitor that doesn't want theirs.

I wouldn't worry about it, a World Championship location matching up to the in-game region it's based off of is actually the outlier rather than the norm (with Worlds 2022 in London being the main example and Worlds 2023 in Yokohama being a bit of a stretch thanks to Kitakami being a DLC region)

Well, that and didn't the Teraleak mention that Greece would be used as a base for the Gen 10 region?

Absolutely nothing of the sort. Greece, especially the Cyclades specifically, is pure conjecture spewed by Khu and co. to get them more attention. The only actual info we have on the region is that it might involve some kind of travelling, thanks to a single (roughly-translated) conversation between higher-ups at GF and anime producers being concerned that Horizons' themes might overlap with Gen 10's.

From what I can recall, this conversation was either in late 2023 or early 2024. It wasn't extremely recent. Gamefreak have had a lot of time to change things since then, and given that Gen 10 would have likely started development around 2021 or 2022 I can imagine it'll look very different now. There's a high chance any kind of inter-region or inter-island travel was cut, either for cost-saving measures or time, since we know they've done this before with Alola and Ohmori is a hack.

The Teraleak confirmed that the code-name for the region was Gaia, and that the Japanese names likely started with a K and an N. From what I understand, that's the only outright confirmed information out there and it tells us absolutely nothing.

Given that Scarlet and Violet's codename was Titan, I can see there being some kind of focus on the world for Gen 10, but it might be just one part of the game or simply describing an overarching theme. Hell, it could just be an artifact of them attempting an "open world" again and deciding on the code name so early in development that they didn't have much else to go off of.

Or it could just be meaningless nonsense. Nothing about Ultra Sun or Moon had anything to do with narwhals, after all.

I am trying to complete the Pokedex the first time in my life. And I have most of them, curiously, these are the ones missing from the first generation.

First time ever that I will get all first 151 in a game.

I find it hilarious how all of the mania for cards is condensed into just the last 4 sets along with 151 and paldean fates. So many of these so-called collectors don’t appreciate some of the more cool cards. A lot of them seem to equate quality of art with how expensive the card is.

At this point would it be worth it? It took them forever to implement a dolphin Pokémon, and look how bad that turned out.
It's true.
I was waiting my whole life for a flamingo.

God, it's such a mediocre design. It just looks like a stupid question mark and we already have one of those.

Went back to Soulsilver to try and finish it (I've restarted my playthrough more times than I'd like to admit), am doing trainer rematches since thats a good source of exp and surprised at how they give EV boosting items, not that I will be needing them for my playthrough but they are welcome.
Since I needed a good pokemon that could learn false swipe AND sleep or paralyze I ended up loading up my emerald save file and breeding a shroomish with both, never did chain breeding for egg moves before since I thought it was a huge headache but it was fairly straight foward, makes me feel a bit sad that breeding for egg moves is pointless now that mirror herb exists. Sure accesibility is nice but so much "identity" has been taken away from existing mechanics in its name, heck I loved using the radar in ORAS solely for the egg moves.

I have also booted my copy of scarlet and felt compelled to try and finish the indigo disk DLC. I remembered that SV aren't "bad" games, still entertaining even if I don't like some of the design choices (like the ride mons being a downgrade from both SUMO and legends arceus) but massively held back by the shitty performance. It is a shame because I feel the games needed a little more of dev time and that reminded of something else:
We aren't getting a new gen this year, which means it will be the first time in fifteen years since we had a gap longer than three years between generations. Still doubt the games will be more polished and optimized than SwSh/SV.

Considering the next gen will also be the big "10", one would hope the devs would actually take their sweet-ass time with everything (game/world/pokedex/etc...)

At least Chatot turned out alright, parrots are cool.

They're really hit and miss with birds.
I don't think it's birds, I just think designs post-Gen V have degraded across the board. Compare other Gen 4 birds like Empoleon, Staraptor and Honchkrow to what came after; Gen 6 only had Talonflame and Hawlucha (laughably), Gen 7 had Decidueye's design infamously breaking with Rowlett/Dartrix, nevermind Toucannon. Can't speak to 8 and 9, though Corviknight seems decently well recieved.

nevermind Toucannon
It's an O.K. bird with a decent gimmick, and skill link is able to help with coverage moves, but my issue with it is that before gen9 it was a normal type that couldn't learn facade. Like this thing is status bait with its crap speed and you decide NOT to give it a move to help it out in someway?

I think there's something about 3D models that made them rethink their designs, and it stinks. It's like they wanted the mons to be easier to model, and animate, so they toned down some of the crazier stuff.
