It's a GUNDAAAAAAAAM. Your general Gundam natter thread!

If you look at Gquuuuuux as a kinda-sorta adaptation of the original Mobile Suit Gundam novels, it makes sense, what with Amuro dead/missing/psycoframe ghost and Ramba Ral surviving to serve a Zeon government that's implied to be more benevolent than the previous rulers. As someone who didn't read the novels, most references like Challia being a more important character and Kyciilia's flashback to the Deikun children and wanting to be a mother just flew over my head.

In short, this show is a weird 0079 anime/novel hybrid and the producers want you to see both.
If you didn't read the novels how can you know what the novels add to the TV series? I read them and this Challia Bull is a totally different character from the novel version. It's not an adaption of the MSG novels in any way. The novels are different but follow the same TV series outline until the third one where Char takes over as the lead character. It's still all about White Base and the characters we know.

Amuro dies in the novels because he's such a strong newtype he screams at other newtypes and can't be spoken to. Char and Challia try to contact him through newtype psychic powers and he cannot be reached so he has to die. This series has nothing like that. Every newtype is able to enter Lalah space and communicate as much as they want to. There is nothing of the novels newtype drama in the series and no one is harmed by being a newtype. The series is about the original Zeon's intent becoming a reality when the Zabis are removed and Lalah fanficing it so she gets a happy ending.

otherwise ... yeah I didnt really hope for any resolution to anything so thats some cool robot

Hathaway 2 teaser. Coming to theaters this winter.
That animation looks rough. If you said it was a fan project I would believe you.

Reading the Zeta novels and it has some great Tomino quotes. Fa and Kamille get called Lesbos when he ditches school with her. Twice it's mentioned that Kamille has an erection and he tries to spy on Fa after she gets out of the shower. He's fleeing the Titans after being interrogated and when he goes to Fa's house he decides to peep in her window hoping to see her naked.

"If they could do a good job being a couple, their child wouldn't grow up to be autistic, nor would he go astray"
Kamille's parents raised him so bad he grew up Autistic. Tomino at his best.

Amuro was on TV for a while until the media got bored of him. They couldn't make sense of his newtype explanations so they just got rid of him. He wasn't given permission to go to space because they feared he would continue to evolve and become an even stronger newtype. He says newtypes aren't psychic and goes into weird philosophy how Buddha, Jesus and Mohammad thought they were enlightened but their followers never became newtypes so they weren't.

Char is the most interesting character in it. A lot of the novel is from his perspective and how he sees the world. The TV series didn't cover stuff like Char only feeling alive when piloting a mobile suit or how the AEUG's engineers were using Zeon style testing. Zeon sent it's suits out to field test them with no test piloting before. Because each branch was in competition they rushed everything out the door and you had to learn on the fly. The Rick Dias was the same and Char likes that as it's familiar to him.

Congratulations Tsurumaki and Enokido, you made something worse than Twilight Axis, that at least had the grace to be short and make references to things that haven't been called back to a thousand times.

All I know about Twilight Axis is those ONAs or whatever. Has anyone actually read those books to learn what they're about?
The ONAs were so bad no one cared to read the novels. Deacon blues (faggot) translated them. It's legacy was complaints the Tristan kit used the old HGUC Alex as the base so it wasn't top of the line Gunpla tech. The kit was fine for a HG and represented the suit good enough.

What's a good starting point for Gundam? I've been replaying Armored Core 6 and now have an urge to consoom more giant robot content, my only experience was Gundam Wing as a kid but I don't really remember it that well.

It depends on what you want in terms of story and animation style. Many of us here would probably recommend anything UC (0079, 08th MS Team, IGLOO, 0080, Stardust Memory, Zeta, ZZ, CCA). Thunderbolt is also a great watch if you can find it.

I've never seen such bad advice bfore. Why would you ever start with any of those except the original? They all rely on knowledge outside of the series. Who starts with CCA?

0079 movies, 00 or SEED are the best starting points.

But I'd say start with either the original Gundam or with The Origin or Thunderbolt.
Where are these recommendations coming from?

The Origin builds off of 0079. It's an alternative timeline that doesn't feed into any other UC media. There's no reason to watch it until you know the original series and understand who these characters are and what the origin changes.

Thunderbolt is a unique style of UC that doesn't connect to other UC media and isn't finished.

Why are you recommending the worst places to start with? Is it because they're short and you haven't watched any of the full series?

Here are the recommended series and why they're recommended.

Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy
The original 1979 TV series was edited into 3 movies with some changes to make it less silly. It's the best way to dip your toe into the water if you are okay with older animation.

Gundam SEED TV Series
SEED was 0079 updated for the 2000s audience. It took the original story's outline and told a more modern story with it. Added more Gundams, more drama and better animation. It's got some issues and it's sequel has a lot of issues so it gets shit on. If you don't mind stock animation being a little over used or you want more of a Romeo and Juliet style conflict between the main characters SEED is a good place to start.

Gundam 00
Before Iron blood orphans 00 was the most recent way to jump into the series. It's animation is flashy and it tells the story of a terrorist group trying to prevent wars by pissing everyone off against them. It has strong characters and Gundams anti-war themes. It's similar to Gundam Wing, which was the intro to Gundam for a lot of the Western fans so they lean towards this as an intro series. It's different to most Gundam but it's a self contained series and movie with Gundams DNA.

Iron blood orphans
A bunch of discarded child soldiers use a Gundam to form a PMC. They go around fucking people up with gritty scenes and lots of bro hugging (No homo does not apply here). If you like edgy gritty slow paced stuff IBO can be enjoyable. It has pacing issues and a bad ending but it got a lot of people on board with Gundam.

Witch From Mercury
You like girl dick.

G Gundam / Build fighters series
If you want a super robot series with Gundam designs this is where you start. The Build fighters stuff is fun and doesn't take it's self too seriously. They are good super robot series and if you want to try Gundam but don't like the war focus these are great.

Anything else is going to have problems recommending because it relies on a previous series (Zeta, CCA, Igloo) or it's an alternative timeline that takes major liberties and makes it confusing to get into the main one (Origin, Thunderbolt, Gquuuuuux). Even the stand alone AU series turn out to be building off of another series (X, Turn-A, Gquuuuux) and they're better watched when you understand the originals.

Gundaminfo has the 0079 movie trilogy up on youtube subbed.

G Gen Eternal, the mobile G Gen game got an update today. It added CCA and Destiny as full series with playable stages. Destiny has 14 stages and you need to beat the G Gen Eternal SEED side story (it's animated and new for the game) to unlock it. CCA is 8 stages and you need to beat ZZ to unlock it. Some of their units aren't implemented yet but all the TV series ones are and the MSV stuff should come soon.

The featured unit for this updates Gacha is Hi Nu with CCA Amuro and Bright and the Ra Calium as a supporter. The Minerva crew and CCA cast make up the rest of the gacha. Only those 2 are FOMOed and have a limited window to get.

Go fuck yourself.
And don't rec the compilations, they rape the canon in an attempt to wallpaper over the fact that Gundam is a haphazardly written goofy children's cartoon show. Encounters In Space is necessary viewing for tweaked scenes and expanded universe material, but only after you've actually seen the entire original show.

You seem angry over a children's cartoon show. Did you get called out on being a secondary?

Explain why any of the recommendations you gave were good. I explained why each of mine was a good entry point.

I recced Thunderbolt and The Origin because they were both animated within 10 years, and I have to both cater to anime fans who get triggered over watching anything old, and play contrarian to Gundam fans who rec Unicorn as a starting point because of reasons beyond my comprehension.
The Origin is because that's technically where I started (though honestly my start was watching SF Debris's videos of the compilations), for being a pretty show, and for being a recent Toonami show. Thunderbolt is for the animation and leaning way more into being a show about cool mechs doing cool things, which I assume is what an Armored Core fan would want. I guess I could've recced Stardust Memory, but see above with my concerns about anime fan autism.

And again, I also recced just starting from the original 1979 Gundam show.

Gundam Wing is a good starting point.

If you like gritty mercenary stuff with child soldiers Iron-Blooded Orphans is a good way to go, I love the setting even with the ending it got.
If you want some 2000s America in the Middle East style commentary 00 Gundam is good (and also my personal favorite) 2 seasons with a movie.

If you want to do UC stuff this thing goes a mile deep and the answers will vary. My personal opinion either start with the original series or watch the 3 movies its based off of and then go from there.
