VX Ace or MV. They have the best featuresets.

Why are there so many different concurrent versions?

Would you say you can make non JRPG games with it? AO ONI is a basic horror chase game, and ib and yumi nikki has some enemies that chase you. So that at least should still be a possibility.

I’m thinking of making Moldbound, about an average, every day, salt of the earth, vintage, terracotta, garden gnome trying to escape Moldavious Figtree’s evil lair.

Started as a throw away joke, but I’m thinking of actually doing it. In the brainstorm phase. If I can think of a decent little plot & some solid beats, I’ll give it a go. Thinking super basic, probably an OG side scroller, -like an early 80’s Contra run & gun. Will know in the next week or so if I’ll be able to make the time to join this round. Really fun event idea, looking forward to seeing all the stuff people come up with.

Also debating if ferrets will be enemies or allies to the main gnome player character. Looks like from now until the end of July is for planning & outlining so there’s still time to brainstorm or even decide to join up for the first round.

To shorten the amount of levels you need to make, it could be a single screen game like Mario Bros? Or it could be like Bubble Bobble or LodeRunner where there are a series of single screen levels.

When you get a game over screen it should be a first person perspective of Moldy sitting down on it and then everything goes dark

GB Studio might be worth listing in the OP. It's likely what I'll be using if I do enter. Not sure yet.

It looks like you can only play the games inside this GB program though?

I wanna participate, are copyrighted assets fine because I'm probably just gonna reuse some random game soundtracks for the music, if not I'll probably just use ai generated music or something

Are copyrighted assets fine.
"If you don't own the rights, you can't use it!" See, 17 U.S. Code § 501 - Infringement of copyright of the Community Rules and Guidelines for further clarification.
There are royalty free music websites and AI music generators for you to play around with (verify licensing).
Although, why not give music making a shot? Now's a good time to try something new and make something unique (even if it's a bit silly)!
There are How-To-Music threads on KF worth a read.

They aren't concurrent. MV is the newest (Technically there's "Unite" but that's just a Unity plugin so it doesn't count) and VX Ace is what came before.
There's so many versions because RPG Maker dates back to the mid 90's.

Yes, you can make non-RPG games in it. Most people do that because the battle system is very hit and miss and it used to be way worse before the original VX.

But you can't get anywhere in Unity without knowing c#, boo or python (I could be confusing one of those languages with another).

You can place something in the 3d space but to make it do something it's up to you to code it.

Other engines allow you to drag and drop and then you can edit variables in the code it generates.
Use Chatgpt and experiment with it a bit.
It's fun learning new programs, and you will have more freedom to play with.

Copy and paste any files, like textures/images, music, models, into your Unity assets folder, drag it into your scene, and apply your code using the inspector tab.

Ask chatgpt for shit like "can you edit this script, so it limits XYZ, can you rotate this with this button, etc." Add your script to the asset in your scene, using the inspector tab.

A word of advice, around ~800 lines of code I believe it is, Chatgpt is going to start getting confused and start removing or replacing shit, so keep it simple.

If you guys need a time saver, I have a bunch of scripts for Unity C# to get you started, they're AI generated code, sure, but they work for what I'm doing. If they don't work for your project, tweak it with AI.
(Feel free to DM, I don't want to spam this thread.) I'm just a hobbyist but I'm happy to try and help any newcomers with Unity.

ChatGPT is the weaksest for unity specially if you code in another language then english. So far Deepseek and Claud way better alternatives.

If I were starting out today I would not go for Unity. I would instead start with Godot.

Tip for vibe/ai coding is to come up with the base of how you want it to function then ask the ai to help you restructure it or improve it. If you ask the AI to come up with the entire thing it's gonna fuck it up by being nedlessly convaluted and complex and making it hard for you to itterate further.

Thinking right now about what to make.

Imagining a tower defense game in 3D isometric view. You place a Tower anywhere on a deserted island. You are given like 100 Kiwi Tokens (KT) or something, at a cost of 2 KT, you drop an egg around the Tower that hatches into a Kiwi. The Kiwi is an AI and will roam around the island to forage and gather resources. It just translates to an automatic KT generator. The more Kiwis you have, the faster you generate KTs.

Using KTs you upgrade your tower. For the demo I'd probably limit it to 2 upgrades to win the game.

Of course you don't just drop eggs onto the Island. At the midpoint of the game, Evil Cows will emerge from the sea to pick off the Kiwis and destroy your Tower. You will have to equip your Kiwis with Deagles (costs 5 KT) to help them fend off the Evil Cows. I forgot to mention you can change the Kiwis' priorities between farming resources and fighting the cows.

This might be too complicated for a demo, especially for a zero affinity for game dev person like me.

I have no idea what I would make and I need to be moving house in the first week of August, but I'm gonna try damn it. I can code, I can fake it 'til I make it for the assets. If anyone more artistically inclined has a vision I'd be open to teaming up.
What's your vision for the game, Agent?

2 ideas i think that are relatively easy and havent been explored are

1. kf anti-waifu dating vns, could be hard depending on what type of art stills you use but there's lots of fun ideas around making mockudating sims, like dating amberlynn reid and having to deliver her meals, wipe her, while she's randomly recording videos on a corner then literally falls down on a mat feeling ""frisky"" (with cut to black, not gooner focused by allah). tons and tons of opportunities, stuff like dating "idf baby killer" hila klein, various troons, or people like Shift or DarkViper devoting 99% of their life to spongebob or gta, so you could just have a small skit of, say, shift staring at you with dead eyes getting a burger, and he just looks at it and then starts going into shock about how it reminds him of a krabby patty then has a full breakdown before saying you're wasting his fucking precious time to get a better record

2. vn idea got bit complicated because i found it humorous, but much easier and simple idea would be a rpg maker game where you survive as jf gariepy's wife ""in the woods"", fighting various things and for the end you fight him and take the kids, happily ever after. also has tons of possibility like if you wanted to make it more like "tard in wonderland" and have crazy shit.

also can't go wrong with stuff like the moon man mod from doom, or something like a tower defense game where the enemy is completely politically incorrect, like jeets with poo attacks or blacks trying to loot or mexicans crossing the border, OR the opposite side, have something like a very basic splatoon paint system or like the paint mechanics in the old crash party games where you have a jeet needing to shit everywhere, possibly fighting other jeets to shit. a infinite runner playing as a mexican going into america and beyond, or a rpg maker playing as a black guy where healing items are stuff like watermelon, fried chicken. honestly that could be pretty cool if you made something like a san andreas lite ISH rpg maker game where you run around fighting niggas, "archers" being generic gunners, "fighters" using baseball bats etc, "taunts" being "AY FUCK YOU BITCH ASS MONKEY". could have shit like a pimp class that works like a summoner would but with hoes, a berserker drug fiend etc. honestly surprised there hasn't been more like that, like chappelle show shit as a game or blaxploitation

I would like to join but I'm concerned I'd not have enough time realistically to get anything workable. I haven't programmed in like a decade and was hoping to get back into it at some point.

Is there a penalty for failing to submit?

Since RPG Maker is allowed, I want to make an idea I've had for some time into a reality. You know how in Undertale you can backtrack and interact with NPCs to see funny dialogue they have? I want to do the same thing, but with Kiwi Farms users instead. I'm not sure what the "gameplay" is gonna be other than a quest where you have to stop EVIL EDDIE from rigging casinos

The only issue is that I can't draw, but I'll still try to make some sprites, even if they're gonna look like shit, doesn't matter though since I'm not intending on winning. Plus, it'll add to the humour of the game.

There needs to be tributes to posters who passed on. Cats immediately comes to mind, Gehenna as well. RIP to both of them.
I only have a bit of experience in Python, and I've forgotten what I learned too. Kind of shameful tbh.
